Sierra Cantabria Rioja Finca El Bosque 2014 - Wine

Tasting Notes

Intense cherry colour. The richest and most compex of the Sierra Cantabria wines, this comes from a poor, stony site and it shows in the intensity of the aromas and flavours. Plush, spicy and peppery with layers of black fruits complemented by oak, fine tannins and a flourish of acidity.

Production Notes

Single-vineyard wine from Finca El Bosque, of only 1.4 ha in size and planted in 1973. Sandy-franc-clay soil in texture with abundance of gravel and small rounded stones on the surface at an altitude of 500 m. High density plantings on trellis with low yields. Organic and biodynamic practises are followed with a deep respect for the land. Destemmed by hand with a rigorous selection of every grape. Cold pre-fermentative maceration takes place at 8deg.C over 3 days. Fermented in large French oak barrels at a temperature of 28deg.C with autochthonous yeast selected from their own vineyards. Pigeage and punching-down takes place twice a day during the first 8 days of fermentation and once a day during the last 5 days. The maceration on the skins continues for 18 days. Slow, malolactic conversion takes place is in barrel and ageing takes place in new French and Center-European Bordelaise oak barrels, where the wine ages for 18 -20 months.

Producer Profile

Bodegas Sierra Cantabria was founded by Guillermo Eguren, a self-made bodeguero, who was, in the family tradition, a viticulturist. His family, native to San Vicente de La Sonsierra, one of the most sought after terroirs in Rioja, had grown grapes in Rioja Alavesa since the 1870s. For decades the family sold their grapes to local producers, but Guillermo recognized the potential that his family's vineyards had to create great wine, and founded Bodegas Sierra Cantabria in 1957. Today, the fourth generation of the Eguren family directs all aspects of the winemaking process, with Marcos Eguren as the winemaker and director of operations and his brother Miguel Angel Eguren as the general manager. The family still prides themselves as viticulturists first, and as a result, all of the grapes are estate grown, and they do not source fruit from any third party source. As viticulturists in Rioja Alavesa, they grow a vast majority of Tempranillo, with only a small percentage of Garnacha and Graciano, as they recognize that Garnacha and Graciano do not ripen reliably in northern Rioja, and they do not want to source their Garnacha and Graciano from Rioja Baja. Bodegas Sierra Cantabria is the family's original winery, and comprises a collection of their most classic style Rioja wines. Due to their viticultural background, the wines are composed of mostly Tempranillo, as they recognize that Garnacha and Graciano do not ripen reliably in Northern Rioja. Although the family's business has evolved over the years through the foundation of other projects, Bodegas Sierra Cantabria comprises their most traditional, classic styled wines. The wines are made from a blend of selected vineyards, as opposed to Vinedos Sierra Cantabria, which is the family's collection of single vineyard wines.
