Humberto Canale Estate Malbec 2018 - Wine

Tasting Notes

It shows off a very refined style, both in the nose and in the mouth. Its careful oak cask ageing gives the wine an ultimate dimension that turns it into an irresistible one. A full bodied wine, with complex structure and surprising notes of red berries, eucalyptus, spice and black pepper. After a year in the bottle, it becomes more unctuous in character, intense and concentrated.

Production Notes

Harvested in the first week in April, the berries are carefully handpicked in small containers and delivered to the winery, just 1 km away from the vineyard. Hand picked grapes are pressed and fermented in stainless steel. 15 to 20% of the wine is then aged in American and French oak casks for 12 months, before being bottled and aged for 6 months before its release.

Producer Profile

Agricultural engineer Humberto Canale founded his namesake winery in Patagonia in 1909 and the company has played a pioneering role in southern Argentinian winemaking for more than a century. This is an arid region that relies on irrigation from the Rio Negro to support agriculture. From space, the Black River appears as a green thread of farmland snaking its way through the brown desert. At 39 degrees southern latitude, the vineyards lie in one of the world's most southerly wine regions. It is a cool-climate region that produces wines more delicate than those found in Mendoza. Nearby Antarctica has a strong cooling effect on the climate and the fierce winds of Patagonia keep the vines pest free. Intensely sunny days and chilly nights (diurnal variation in wine geek parlance) allows for slow and consistent ripening of grapes, every vintage. What do these perfect viticultural conditions mean for you? They mean well-balanced, expressive wines that can be offered at an unbeatable value. If you are looking for great wines to pour at a large gathering, or any occasion for that matter, look no further than Humberto Canale.
