The Cragganmore Distillery is located near the Scotland's fastest flowing river, in a big barley producing area, surrounded by peaty land. Cragganmore starts with a lightly smoked barley malt, mixed with water drawn from the Craggan Burn and fermented. Doubled distilled in unique flat topped stills originally designed by founder John Smith and faithfully maintained to the present day. Unusually there is no sherry wood used in maturation, instead the 12yo is aged in second-fill bourbon casks, a deliberate choice designed to reduce the obvious vanilla and woodiness imparted by long aging in first-fill barrels. This contributes to the austere and complex character of Cragganmore, which takes a little time to open up in the glass.
