Franz Haas Schweizer Manna 2016 - Wine

Tasting Notes

Manna is a unique wine that Franz has dedicated to Maria Luisa; first released in 1995, it is a cuvee of Riesling and Chardonnay, a part of Gewurztraminer and a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc; starting with the vintage of 2013, Kerner has been added by decreasing the percentages of Riesling and Gewurztraminer. In its youth, the wine has yellow-golden notes, and after a few years of evolving, intense golden tones appear. Thanks to its special characteristics Manna seduces with a complex and stratified bouquet that suggests notes of elderflowers, pistachios and rose petals. It strikes with its complexity and concentration combined with a soft elegance and a mineral structure. Manna is a versatile wine, always transforming, the different grape varieties give this wine different notes and the high percentage of Riesling contributes to keeping it alive over the years.

Production Notes

Grapes are harvested and processed separately, due to different maturation periods. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are fermented in barrique, while Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Kerner are left to ferment in stainless steel tanks. At the end of the fermentation, the young wines are assembled to favor the combination and harmonization of the various aromatic components. After ten months of aging the wine is bottled and further refined for a few months.

Producer Profile

The Haas family has been growing grapes in Montagna in the province of Bolzano for generations. However, it is only with Franz, the current proprietor, that they have begun to produce and bottle quality wines. Franz studied at Geisenheim in Germany before working as a broker of Italian wines in the German market. After several years, he took over the running of the family business. Franz Haas goes to tremendous lengths to grow good grapes and then strives to preserve the flavours of the fruit during winemaking. As a result, the wines that he produces are infused with great character and with a purity and balance on the palate. To maintain the aromatic quality of his wines, Franz Haas will bottle his entire production under screwcap from the 2018 vintage onwards. A revolutionary choice, he is one of the first Italian wine producers to do so. His Pinot Nero is one of Italy's best. It is light in colour yet intensely varietal on both the nose and palate, with a lovely tannin structure. Of his whites, the Pinot Grigio is very classy - the real thing - while the 'Lepus' (made solely from Pinot Bianco) is excellent. His flagship wine is the 'Schweizer' Manna, a blend of Riesling, barrel-fermented Chardonnay, Traminer and barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. The aromatic quality of the Riesling and Traminer come through in the glass, but they are given depth and texture by the subtle use of oak on the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. It is one of Italy's best white wines.
