Conterno Fantino Dolcetto dAlba DOC Bricco Bastia 2018 - Wine

Tasting Notes

Mouthwatering acid structure and agreeably soft in texture. Displays lovely cherry, berry and floral flavours, with an earthy, barnyard note. Ready to drink.

Production Notes

This wine is from 4.5ha of land close to the Conterno Fantino winery. At just under 600m a.s.l. the vineyard is high for the Barolo region and average slope is consequently steep, at 25%. The composition of the soil is predominantly sandy (57%) which is ideal for the production of perfumed, floral Dolcetto with an attractive acid structure. The average age of the vines is 15 years, and over recent seasons quality has been improved through top grafting with small-berried, loose-bunched clones. Yields are low for Dolcetto, at slightly over 50 hl/ha. Harvest is generally in the second half of September. After a brief maceration on the skins, the Dolcetto spends 8 months in stainless steel vats prior to bottling.

Producer Profile

Founded in 1982, Conterno Fantino testifies to the talent and vision of viticulturist Claudio Conterno and his partner, oenologist Guido Fantino. These great wines start in exceptional vineyard sites in Monforte dAlba and are lovingly nurtured in their state of the art winery at Bricco Bastia. This location is scenically set, overlooking the most ancient part of Monforte with a sweeping view of the majestic Alps. Conterno Fantino's historical nucleus is Ginestra, one of the historical crus of Monforte documented as far back as the 19th century. Dolcetto Bricco Bastia is from the vineyard adjacent to the winery and is packed with ripe fruit and spice. Barbera Vignota is from a roll call of Monforte cru vineyards: Ginestra, Bussia Sottana, Mosconi, Pajana and Ornati. The wine is intensely perfumed with lush red cherry fruit and a rich, ripe palate balanced by fresh acidity and a beautiful finish. In 2017 Conterno Fantino will debut their new Barolo from the Monforte cru of Castelletto. Sori Ginestra and Vigna del Gris are aged in barrique, 50% new, whilst Mosconi and Castelletto are aged in a combination of barrique and bottle. Sori Ginestra is southerly exposed at 300m on marly, calcareous terrain, conducive to remarkable structure and cellar life. Vigna del Gris, also from Ginestra at 300m, is on a sandier portion that faces south-east and favours delicacy and elegance. Mosconi retains part of its original plantings from 1950 and is opposite Ginestra, at a slightly higher altitude of 400m and southerly exposed. The vineyard is high in manganese and produces a Barolo with solid tannins that need time to evolve.
