Tasting Notes

A bright, pure aromatic sparkling wine with citrus and tropical flavours combined with a mineral, mouth-watering finish.

Production Notes

From the revered Fechner bros. vineyard in the Northern Eden Valley. The Fechner bros. have the only Kerner vineyard in Australia after they encountered the Riesling cross-breed during a visit to Germany in 2003. The vineyard is adjacent to a Limestone quarry. These vines are all growing through a layer of clay into Limestone bedrock, which underpins the aromatic impact of the germanic white varieties. A prevailing breeze here keeps the vineyard dry, which allows for a light-handed approach to weed/disease control. The two major components (Riesling & Kerner) are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed in order to minimise phenolic impact. The Gewurztraminer, however, is machine harvested and given about 24 hours skin contact in order to accentuate varietal aromatic impact. Both primary and secondary fermentation (charmat method) were undertaken in delicate temperature controlled inox fermenters without the use of sulfur or other additions. Finally, a modest (5.4g/L) dosage was added for texture and body. Bottled unfined and with minimal sulphur addition.

Producer Profile

This is the exciting new face of winemaking in Australia. Established in 2008 by brothers-in-law Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela, Chaffey Bros champion Riesling, Shiraz and Grenache from Eden and Barossa Valleys. Working in the realm of minimal intervention, artisan, small-batch wines, the pair prioritise experimentation and quality. Dan and Theo share a love for the sometimes brutal, remote landscapes of Barossa and Eden Valleys, which also boast a rich tapestry of passionate communities. We have long admired the Chaffey Bros wines - the whites all have this beautiful floral note about them, making them equally elegant and quaffable, while the reds are punchy, balancing razor-like acidity with purity of fruit to produce a signature, easy-drinking far removed from the classic bruiser Barossa Shiraz wines of the past. The Chaffey Bros also are not afraid to try something new, and for me, this is what new wave Australian wine is all about! Great wines that challenge your thinking at an affordable price. Watch out for the Pax Aeterna - a 100% Grenache, whole cluster pressed, minimal SO2, super crunchy, ripe, red fruit, a real corker of a wine and looks banging too!
