Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel 2017 - Wine

Tasting Notes

We take immense pride in the quality of this wine as we want it to reflect how good California’s beloved Zinfandel can be.  A quick glimpse at what goes into it tells most of the story.  In order of percentage, the wine comes from Bedrock Vineyard, Teldeschi Ranch, Sodini Ranch, Nervo Ranch, Katushas, Evangelho, Esola, Casa Santinamaria, and Story Vineyard.  It is about 88% Zinfandel blended with Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet and many different interplanted varieties that maintain poise and add complexity and structure.  This has plenty of juiciness and should be delightful in the nearer term with a good decant; however, as many have discovered this wine will age gracefully and improve with time in bottle.

Production Notes

We embrace uninoculated fermentations, native malolactic, the use of whole clusters in fermentation, minimal handling, rarely or never fine, avoid additions of things common in California like water and tartaric acid, and would rather use no oak than cheap oak. However, wine is merely a stopping off point in the natural progression of fermentations that start with fresh fruit and end in vinegar; wine by definition is a result of manipulating a natural process to create something delicious. As such, we see winemaking as a craft and at the core the greatest wines are a rich and refined interweaving of art, science and experience.

Critics Reviews

Wine Advocate 89pts (2016) - Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Zinfandel Old Vine is scented of black and blue fruit preserves, prunes, nuts, earth and spice cake with chocolate box notions. The palate is full-bodied with loads of freshness and soft and juicy in the mouth, finishing spicy.

Producer Profile

Bedrock Wine Co. was started in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson. Working out of a small converted chicken coop in a friend's backyard, Morgan focused on making personality-filled wines wrought from a small array of thoughtfully farmed vineyards. Over time the chicken coop, with its outdoor fermenters and tiny basket press, gave way to production at another friend's winery before the elegant tin-sided warehouse" eventually became Bedrock's oenological home. After six years of working alone, the winery welcomed the addition of Chris Cottrell as a partner along with a small, dedicated staff. The winery is first and foremost a mission-driven operation dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. These vineyards, planted by California's viticultural pioneers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are living pieces of history. Not only are the duo able to draw inspiration from those very pioneers, but they get to use the materials planted long before their arrival, which have survived two world wars, Prohibition and a constantly evolving marketplace. The beautiful diversity of vineyards is certainly a challenge, but it is equally exciting for the team. They choose to embrace the challenge of capturing greatness from a viticultural puzzle of old vine field blend plantings, sourced from both their own vineyards and beyond. Throughout all their work is a dedication to making wines that maintain poise while being infused with California sun. And, most importantly, that are delicious.
