Au Bon Climat Bien Nacido Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2016 - Wine

Tasting Notes

This vineyard has hit its stride producing marvelous Chardonnays year after year. On the palate, classic Chardonnay flavors of apple, citrus and vanilla go on and on. The aroma reveals this is obviously Chardonnay made in an old world style. Sweet barrel spice mixes nicely with a lemon limey note from the fruit. It is rich on the palate, and the classic Chardonnay flavors of apple, citrus and vanilla go on and on. This lively wine will go with wide assortment of foods. Seared scallops in butter with a touch of orange, roast chicken with rosemary are just a couple of favorites with this Chardonnay.

Production Notes

The grapes were hand harvested, whole cluster pressed (to minimize tannin extraction from the skins), totally barrel fermented in 100% new Francois Freres barrels, aged for 18 months, then bottled unfiltered.

Critics Reviews

Wine Advocate 92pts (2015) - The 2015 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard comes entirely from Block K, the oldest block of Chardonnay in the Bien Nacido vineyard. It has a nose of bruised apple, acacia, lemon and lime peel, crushed stone and damp hay with a core of soft white stone fruit. The palate is light to medium-bodied and gives up intense fruits, segueing to honey-nut nuance, with juicy acidity and a long, textured, savory finish. 200 cases were made.

Producer Profile

Founded in 1982, Au Bon Climat produces internationally-recognized Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from grapes grown in California's Santa Barbara County. Located at the foot of one of California's most highly rated vineyards, Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley, one of the finest sites in California, ideal for the production of the refined, Burgundian style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to which Jim so aspires. ABC, as it is more commonly referred to, has won universal acclaim for its wines thanks to owner & winemaker Jim 'Wild Boy' Clendenen. Jim regards Burgundy as the benchmark to which he should aspire; he purchases clones of Pinot Noir from Burgundy in a bid to replicate as closely as possible the restraint and finesse of the wines from the region. Jim eschewed a career in law for the lure of the vine following a month's stay in Burgundy and Champagne when he was 21. He has never looked back, although he is frequently to be found darkening the doors along the stretch of the Cote d'Or. His wines combine the mineral precision and grace of Burgundy with the flair of the West Coast.
