Alpha Estate Xinomavro Syrah Axia 2016 - Wine

Tasting Notes

A wonderful example of Xinomavro, with its complex, but typical bouquet of small berried red fruits, leather and pepper, clove and vanilla spice. Structured, with rounded tannins and a balancing acidity, this wine has well-integrated oak and quince on the finish.

Production Notes

The grapes were destemmed, prior to a light crushing and a cold soak with skin contact. The alcoholic fermentation took place at gradually increasing temperatures. The wine was then maintained on its fine lees or "sur lie", for a period of approximately eight months with regular stirring. Maturation lasted for 12 months in Allier oak barrels of medium grain, with a light toasting, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

Critics Reviews 16.5pts (2016) - Smart new livery and the only one of the Alpha wines that has a sensible bottle. Deep cherry red. Extremely inviting aroma that combines Syrah's peppery dark fruit and Xinomavro's cherry and spice. More savoury on the palate and elegant too. No lack of stony dark fruit. The structure is refined and walking in step with the fruit. Lovely balance and a freshness that seems to come as much from the tannins as from the acidity. So drinkable – but no rush to do so. Really moreish while it is still just slightly chewy. You could just about drink it on its own but it would be better with food, and has the potential for greater complexity. (JH)
