Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Ripe al Convento 2012 - Wine

Tasting Notes

A complex bouquet of red and black berries, damson, blackcurrant complemented by mineral notes and hints of spice. Ripe al Convento is opulent and smooth on the palate, with rich, elegant tannins and indulgent notes of coffee and tobacco. The finish is almost endless, a treat for the senses.

Production Notes

The grapes were hand harvested with cluster selection and pressed using a soft horizontal press. Fermentation took place in stainless steel at 30°C and lasted 10 days, with maceration lasting 33 days. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation. It was matured for five years prior to its release - by law a minimum of two years in oak and six months in bottle. Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels were used for the maturation of the wine

Critics Reviews

Vinous 93pts (2012) - The 2012 Ripe al Convento di CastelGiocondo is laced with generous dark cherry, plum, cloves, menthol, chocolate, new leather and blackberry jam. Powerful and enveloping in the glass, with terrific persistence, the 2012 is a terrific example of the Frescobaldi style at its best. The wine is dense and plush to the core, and yet all of the elements fall into place effortlessly.

Producer Profile

CastelGiocondo epitomises the spirit of Montalcino. It is considered to be one of the most historical estates of Montalcino, as it was one of the first producers of Brunello di Montalcino during the 1800s. The vines are overlooked by the castle and the small medieval town of Montalcino. The combination of the unique location of the vineyard, which is situated at 300 to 400 metres altitude; the south western orientation, which benefits from the warming afternoon sun; and the free draining marl soil culminates to produce this top quality Sangiovese. The CastelGiocondo wines are distinguished by their opulence, power and extraordinary longevity.
