Chaffey Brothers Pax Aeterna Old Vine Grenache 2018 - Wine

Tasting Notes

An exciting perfumed aroma, bursting with fresh cranberry, anise and spice. The palate is full of crunchy red fruits with a hint of savoury complexity. Energetic and unashamedly delicious.

Production Notes

Friend and vigneron Kevin Schilds grandfather and father planted these grenache vines with cuttings taken from another old Grenache vineyard - likely some of the earliest Grenache planted in the Barossa. The vineyard is in the sandy soils between the Vine Vale and Marananga parishes. This Grenache is hand-picked and sourcedfrom two distinct areas in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in an open fermenters with about 1/3rd whole bunches in the ferment left to cold soak for 24 hours and natural yeasts left to do their thing. A further 6 days of maceration takes place with the combination of selected yeast. The grapes are then pressed into large format second and third use French barrels (500L Puncheons) where the wine spends only three months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined to showcase the joy of tasting this wine in the barrel hall without any laboratory / bottling line accoutrements.

Producer Profile

This is the exciting new face of winemaking in Australia. Established in 2008 by brothers-in-law Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela, Chaffey Bros champion Riesling, Shiraz and Grenache from Eden and Barossa Valleys. Working in the realm of minimal intervention, artisan, small-batch wines, the pair prioritise experimentation and quality. Dan and Theo share a love for the sometimes brutal, remote landscapes of Barossa and Eden Valleys, which also boast a rich tapestry of passionate communities. We have long admired the Chaffey Bros wines - the whites all have this beautiful floral note about them, making them equally elegant and quaffable, while the reds are punchy, balancing razor-like acidity with purity of fruit to produce a signature, easy-drinking style...so far removed from the classic bruiser Barossa Shiraz wines of the past. The Chaffey Bros also are not afraid to try something new, and for me, this is what new wave Australian wine is all about! Great wines that challenge your thinking at an affordable price. Watch out for the Pax Aeterna - a 100% Grenache, whole cluster pressed, minimal SO2, super crunchy, ripe, red fruit, a real corker of a wine and looks banging too!
